Was your home built before 1970?
Lead water pipes were banned decades ago due to associated health risks. If your home was built before 1970, it could still be connected to a lead supply pipe.
Not sure what your water supply pipe is made from?
How water reaches your home
Where Lead Can Enter the System
Water leaving UK treatment works meets strict national drinking water standards. However in some pre-1970 properties, the private water supply pipe (the underground pipe running from the property boundary into your home) can affect water quality before it reaches your tap. If that pipe is made of lead, small amounts can dissolve into the water as it passes through.
The History
Lead was widely used in UK plumbing because it was flexible, easy to install and met the standards of the time. From 1970, its use for water supply pipes has since been banned. If your property still has an old lead supply pipe, the recommended advice is replacement with a modern MDPE connection. Responsibility for this sits with the homeowner.
The Solution
We can help you identify what material your pipe is made from with our free survey and provide a fixed-price quotation if replacement is required.

“There is no safe level of lead in drinking water”

“There is no safe level of lead exposure"

“Drinking water with high levels of lead can cause serious damage to your health”

“Exposure to high levels of lead in a short time can result in damage to the brain and kidneys”
Guidance you can trust

“Lead pipes should be replaced as soon as possible”
"Inorganic lead is probably able to cause cancer"

Lead exposure affects all ages, especially young children
For families, this isn’t a cause for panic, but an opportunity to make an informed decision.
Older pipework can remain a source of lead exposure in some properties. According to UK public health guidance, even low levels of exposure may affect children’s brain development.
If your home was built before 1970, it only takes a few minutes to check your supply pipe.

1. Check
We’ll begin with a visual inspection to check whether your supply pipe is lead. If it’s not clearly identifiable, we can carry out water testing using a photometer to check for lead content.
2. Change
If lead is found, we can replace it with a safe and modern WRAS (Water Regulations Approval Scheme) MDPE pipe.
3. Complete
After we’ve installed your new pipe, we’ll liaise directly with your water company to complete the upgrade — ensuring your entire supply, from mains to tap is fully lead-free.
